We all love the Miyoo Mini and the Miyoo Mini Plus, but new (and often leaked) information about what is often being called the “Miyoo Mini Flip” has retro handheld collectors on the edge of their seats.

This will be a periodically updated article covering everything we know so far about the Miyoo Mini Flip. When its release date is, what specs it will have, which games and consoles it will be able to play, and what we know about its price. Let’s dive in!

Miyoo Mini Flip Design

Before we get into more technical information, let’s first explore what the Miyoo Mini Flip actually is. Based on the name, it should be pretty obvious that this retro handheld flips!

So as we can see from these leaked images, both in the conceptual renderings and in the leaked “work in progress” models, it looks very similar to a Gameboy Advance SP’s clamshell design.

Controls

As you can see, there is nothing too revolutionary here. The Miyoo Mini Flip appears to come with ABXY buttons, Start and Select buttons, a D-Pad, (hopefully a total of four) shoulder buttons, a function button, and last but certainly not least: two analog sticks.

These controls will likely be good quality, as the Miyoo Mini series is known for having good controls. The quality of the analog sticks remains to be seen, but there’s nothing here that would make us doubt Miyoo’s production quality.

Screen

I couldn’t find anything definitive on the screen yet. I would expect it to be standard for this league of retro handhelds, which would be a 3.5″ 640×480 IPS screen.

This is what you get with the Miyoo Mini Plus, and with similar devices such as the RG35XX. To keep the price down, I would expect Miyoo to stick with what has been working well for the industry at large.

Colors

Again, I haven’t been able to find anything definitive on which colors will be available for the Miyoo Mini Flip when it launches. There have been a few renders showing different colors, from plainer to bright pastel designs.

These are likely just conceptual, and we’ll have to wait and see until we get official confirmation from Miyoo. But speaking for all of us: please keep the pastel design, Miyoo!

Miyoo Mini Flip Specs

Luckily for us, there does seem to be some official confirmation with some of the specs. And with everything we know or can guess, it’s super exciting to know we could have this in the body of a Gameboy Advance SP.

RK3566

Miyoo support has seemingly confirmed that the Miyoo Mini Flip will come equipped with an RK3566 chip. This chip is also found in other devices such as the Powkiddy x55.

See the next section to see what games and consoles the RK3566 can run.

Other Specs

From what I’ve seen, no other specs have been leaked or confirmed by Miyoo. So stay tuned, this article will be updated with any new information that will come out. However, I would imagine we will be getting similar features to the Miyoo Mini Plus, such as WiFi connectivity.

Which Games and Consoles The Miyoo Mini Flip Can Run

As we just mentioned, the Miyoo Mini Flip seems to be confirmed to have the RK3566 chip. While we have no confirmation on other specs, we do have a vague idea of what the Miyoo Mini Flip can play based on the performance of other handhelds with the same chip.

So keep in mind nothing is set in stone yet, and these are just speculations based on what we do know about the Miyoo Mini Flip, and the performance of similar handhelds.

I can’t cover every console here, so I will just mention the ones that are more up in the air.

Playstation One

The Miyoo Mini Flip will certainly be able to play PlayStation One games with ease, and even many games at 2x resolution

Nintendo 64 (N64)

Devices also using the RK3566 can often play a high percentage of N64 games at full speed, but generally, you won’t be getting good performance on the harder-to-run N64 games.

Sega Dreamcast

I would expect to see good performance in the majority of Dreamcast games. You might need to lower the resolution or employ frame-skip for certain games, but I’m fairly confident the Miyoo Mini Flip will be pretty decent for Dreamcast emulation.

Nintendo DS

You can get good Nintendo DS performance on handhelds using much less powerful hardware than the Miyoo Min Flip will, so I would expect good performance here! Also, you will have the same clamshell design as the DS, so you even gain some bonus nostalgia points!

PlayStation Portable (PSP)

I would expect pretty good performance for PSP games, and even in some of the harder-to-run games. But I would imagine (based on the performance of the similar Powkiddy x55) that you will experience some stutters and slowdowns on some of the hardest-to-run PSP games.

PlayStation 2 (PS2)

While some people have tried to push RK3566 handhelds to play PlayStation 2 games, it just doesn’t work very well. So don’t expect to get much (if any) PlayStation 2 gameplay in on your Miyoo Mini Flip.

GameCube

It’s the same case for the GameCube as for the PlayStation 2: don’t expect to get much GameCube performance here. While you might be able to achieve somewhat playable gameplay for some games with some tinkering, I wouldn’t recommend this handheld for GameCube whatsoever.

Low-End Retro Emulation

The Miyoo Mini Flip will be able to play basically anything lower than the PlayStation One with ease, no questions asked. So yes, you will be able to play GameBoy Advance on this handheld.

Expect exactly what you got on the Miyoo Mini, so some notable ones include (but are not limited to): NES, SNES, GBA, GB, GBC, MD, MS, WSC, PCE, FBN, NGP, FBA, MAME, NEOGEO.

Miyoo Mini Flip Release Date

So now that we know a bit more about the Miyoo Mini Flip, one question is on all of our minds: when does the Miyoo Mini Flip come out?

That is a tricky question, because there have been some speculated release dates, even some dates given by Miyoo’s support themselves, and they have all passed.

So where do we go from here? All we can do is speculate at this point. Seeing the recently leaked images of the Miyoo Mini Flip’s models, it could very likely be close to the final stages of its development.

Not to mention the fact that Miyoo’s support stated they were hoping for a December release, you would imagine it would have to have been close to being released back in December 2023. So now in 2024, barring any setbacks, we’re logically closer to the release date.

So if I had to guess, the release would be at some point from February to April 2024. This could be off, but I feel that if they had hoped for a December release, anything past a four-month delay would be somewhat unrealistic.

Miyoo Mini Flip Price

There is nothing that I’ve heard from Miyoo that explicitly tells us how they will price the Miyoo Mini Flip, but we do have some general signals that we can use to guess how much the Miyoo Mini Flip will cost.

First, we have launch prices of devices such as the Miyoo Mini Plus, which launched at around $70. But the Miyoo Mini Flip is seemingly confirmed to be more powerful than the Miyoo Mini Plus, so a bigger price tag is expected.

Handhelds using the RK3566 (as the Miyoo Mini Flip seemingly will) often sell for around $90, but could easily run you over $100.

Looking at the hype and the novelty factor of the Miyoo Mini Flip, I would not be surprised to see it retailing for $100, or even a bit more than that. There could be a surprise and we could see it selling for something as low as $85, but I doubt it.

When more definitive information is released, I’ll update this article. But for now, my going assumption is the Miyoo Mini Flip will cost around $100, give or take a few bucks.

Miyoo Mini Flip Review

Based on what we know so far, here is my “review” of the Miyoo Mini Flip: it appears to be a super promising handheld, and hopefully it can do something that hasn’t been done before in retro handheld gaming.

As far as I’m aware, the only retro handheld company to make a clamshell handheld truly inspired by the Gameboy Advance SP is Powkiddy with their V90 handheld. But Miyoo is aiming to do something truly special.

A powerful handheld in clamshell form factor, with two analog sticks, paired with the RK3566 chip is truly a groundbreaking combination. Imagine playing Super Mario 64 on a GameBoy, and that’s what you will likely be getting with the Miyoo Mini Flip.

Especially if we can get custom firmware, such as OnionOS, the Miyoo Mini Flip will be absolutely one of a kind!

While we don’t exactly know the price yet, I think anything under $100 is fair. While it may not be the absolute best value for your money, the clamshell design makes up for that in my opinion.

The Miyoo Mini Plus seems to be a great option for both collectors and first-time retro handheld buyers.
