The Miyoo Mini Plus is one of the most sought-after retro handhelds right now. Although a great handheld, many people are looking for alternatives.
Whether you want a retro handheld that is more powerful than the Miyoo Mini Plus, one cheaper than the Miyoo Mini Plus, or one that is in stock and more readily available, this article will explore the best alternative retro handhelds to the Miyoo Mini Plus.
1) ANBERNIC RG35XX
The ANBERNIC RG35XX is probably the closest of any alternative to the Miyoo Mini Plus. It sports a good-looking 3.5" 640x480 screen just like the Miyoo Mini Plus, and has pretty much the same design (just with different spacing, and it's slightly larger).
The controls are also very good, but some users have expressed some dislike of the Diagonals on the D-Pad. Overall the controls are completely satisfactory the vast majority of the time.
When it comes to emulation, it is a bit better than the Miyoo Mini Plus. You will still be limited to what you will be on Miyoo's handheld (good emulation up to the PlayStation One), but for almost all games the ANBERNIC RG35XX will be indistinguishable from the Miyoo Mini Plus.
The RG35XX also can use custom firmware, most notably GarlicOS. GarlisOS adds a good look (similar to Miyoo Mini Plus' OnionOS), and some new features such as the ability to Overclock.
There are some differences in features between it and the Miyoo Mini Plus: positives such as HDMI out, and negatives such as no built-in WiFi.
Overall the Anbernic RG35XX is a great Miyoo Mini Plus alternative and the closest out of any handheld on this list.
2) R36S
The R36S is the cheapest handheld on this list, coming in at a price of around $40. Don't let the price deceive you, the R36S is actually more powerful than the Miyoo Mini Plus.
This handheld can play everything up to many Sega Dreamcast games, some Nintendo 64 games, Nintendo DS games, and most PlayStation One games at a 2x resolution. The Miyoo Mini Plus can play some of those, but when comparing it with the R36S you will see the latter is clearly a more powerful handheld.
It also comes with two analog sticks, which is a welcomed addition for those who like playing more 3D games. But everything can't be perfect, the buttons and D-Pad on the R36S feel a bit stiff and aren't the best we've ever felt. So if you want the best of the best controls, I would think more carefully about buying the R36S.
But other than the stiff controls, the R36S is a great handheld. It has a 3.5" 640x480 screen that actually looks a bit better than the Miyoo Mini Plus screen.
The R36S comes equipped with ArkOS, which looks super nice and is packed with a ton of features. You do miss out on things like built-in Wifi, but for $40 you get much more than you would expect.
3) ANBERNIC RG280V
The ANBERNIC RG280V is a unique little handheld, there really is nothing else like it on the market. For $65-75, you get a handheld similarly as powerful as the Miyoo Mini Plus, but in a much smaller form.
This handheld comes with a 2.8" 320x480 screen, which is actually the only screen that's not 3.5" on this list. The RG280V has a solid feel and good-feeling controls.
This handheld can play the majority of the PlayStation One's catalog, and even a bit above that. And like every other handheld here, it will play everything below these (such as 8-bit and 16-bit consoles) great!
This handheld doesn't have as many custom firmware options as a handheld such as the Miyoo Mini Plus since this handheld is a few years old, but the experience you will be able to get will be satisfactory for the majority of users. And once again, you won't be getting HDMI out or built-in WiFi.
If you are especially interested in a smaller handheld, the RG280V is a solid option.
4) R33S
Don't let your eyes deceive you; this is not the Miyoo Mini Plus. The R33S is a Miyoo Mini Plus clone, and it does a pretty good job of copying its look.
The R33S costs about $40 and comes with an Rk3326, the same as the R36S. So you will be getting better performance on the MM+, most notably in being able to play PlayStation One games at 2x resolution, some Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo DS, and a small amount of PSP.
Unfortunately, you don't have analog sticks on the R33S, so you won't be able to play many N64 and Dreamcast games. So if that's something you care about, I would recommend the R36S, as it has the same specs, but two analog sticks that open the ability to play more consoles.
But the R33S has pretty decent controls; its buttons feel nice, and the D-Pad is actually half-decent. The controls certainly aren't as good as an actual Miyoo Mini Plus, but they are better than those of most clone devices out there.
The R33S comes with ArkOS, which is of course feature-rich, but unfortunately, there is no ability to use the highly acclaimed OnionOS as you could on an actual Miyoo Mini Plus.
While the R33S isn't the best handheld on this list, if you love the look of the Miyoo Mini Plus, this is the closest you'll get.
The R33S is currently unavailable.
5) ANBERNIC RG35XX Plus
We've already looked at the RG35XX, but what about the RG35XX Plus? This handheld comes in at about $75, but those extra few dollars bring a lot of new features.
Firstly, you get great controls. The RG35XX Plus has the same general design as the Miyoo Mini Plus (although it is a bit larger), and it comes with a great feeling D-Pad and buttons. It also has the same screen size, a 3.5" 640x480 display.
The performance is of course better than the Miyoo Mini Plus. The RG35XX Plus can play everything the MM+ can, plus the majority of Sega Dreamcast games with decent performance, some Nintendo N64, Nintendo DS, some PSP, and PlayStation One games pretty consistently at 2x resolution.
Not only is the ANBERNIC RG35XX Plus the most powerful handheld on this list, it is also the only handheld to have built-in WiFi. You also have other features like HDMI out.
You also get many custom firmware options, most notably GarlicOS 2.0, which is still in development. GarlicOS 2.0 is a full-featured OS that is very similar to Miyoo Mini Plus' OnionOS.
